Luke Askew – Beek Street (2022)

Dramatic, soulful, introspective and intimate – this is how I would describe singer-songwriter Luke Askew. A new name in the music scene, Luke Askew offers a refreshing tap on the shoulder in what can be called a stagnating industry. With only two songs to his name, the UK-based artist is a newbie; however, he is building a loyal following from the outset with grassroots performances, coverage from BBC Introducing, and adds to various playlists. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Beek Street’.

Spurred by a vision of creating melodies as a true expression of life in its entirety, Luke Askew has a raw, vulnerable and intimate sound to his songs. He shares that he would “…love to create songs that truly resonate with people. Music can be a refuge and power for people. I aim to achieve a deep emotional response with the music that I create.” In his sophomore single ‘Beek Street’, we see (or rather hear) Askew touching on human fragility in his delicate, elegant way.

Penned, recorded and produced by Luke Askew himself, ‘Beek Street’ adopts the intimate intensity of the DIY approach to music. In fact, Askew even prefers to write alone as a means of creating work that is “unprocessed, undiluted and powerful…” If Prince were to work with Stevie Wonder, ‘Beek Street’ is what they would produce. The obscurity of Prince melds effortlessly with the soul of Stevie Wonder, as well as a slight nod to contemporary pop beats in the arrangement. Memorable and unique, Luke Askew captures old-school soul rock and brings it to modern-day audiences.

Despite being an emerging artist, Luke Askew has a sophisticated, mature and polished sound; however, there is a raw innocence in the melancholic tones. I highly recommend this artist to everyone and cannot wait for more from this natural talent.
