Lydia Briggs – Come To Me (2020)

Honest, emotional and utterly hypnotic, Lydia Briggs is a young girl with a big voice. Hailing from Cleveland, this US-based powerhouse has already earned a very strong and loyal following since she began her music project in 2019. At least, I think it was 2019 – that’s at least when she started streaming on Spotify. However, considering the youthful obsession with social media (does Spotify count as social media) I’m not really surprised. What does surprise me is the siren-like quality of Briggs’ voice.

2020 has been a year of uncertainty, but Briggs’ ‘Come To Me’ (released in November 2020) offers the certainty of pure joy when listening to it. Known for her bohemian sensibility and blues-influenced piano style, Briggs adopts a stripped-down, acoustic approach in the new single. Her voice may be distinctive, but there is some reminiscence to Carol King in her music.

As I mentioned, Briggs’ vocals are distinctive, but it is the combination of her soul-piercing alto with heartwarming instrumentation that carries you atop a coursing river of music. The addition of the cello, played by Alan Harrel of the Cleveland Orchestra, seems to add a greater depth to an already poignant tune. Perhaps it is the barebones-ness of ‘Come To Me’ that contributes to the intimacy of the track, but the moving vocals are what grabs a person with their melodic melancholy. Sophisticated, mature and elegant, Briggs contemplates the fragility of the human spirit with the delicate ‘Come To Me’.

“The song is about vulnerability, a look into my heart at a moment of intimacy, connection and trust. When you are most vulnerable you are open to sharing who you are – all that makes you who you are as a person.” – Lydia Briggs on ‘Come To Me’
