meelu – candlelight (2026)
“…hope my songs help you take on the world, thanks for stopping by.” – the opening line on meelu’s Spotify description, and the insight into what meelu is all about. South African singer-songwriter meelu blends intimate folk storytelling with atmospheric D&B-driven production. Her debut single, ‘Slowburner’, introduced her to the world – streaming, at least – and hit the SA Indie Charts. From there, she took her anthemic, confident, and engaging melodies across the pond to UK festivals, Y Not Festival and The Great Escape, while also performing at her home country’s Splashy Fen. She has enjoyed rave reviews across the globe, international airplay, and supported the likes of Casey Lowry and Jeremy Loops, alongside her debut headline show in London. In fact, her music has even featured in the German film Mädchen Mädchen. Today, we listened to her most recent release, ‘candlelight’.
Considered one of her most intimate releases to date, ‘candlelight’ delves into the personal experience of losing her grandmother. The death was, as you can imagine, rather emotional, and the significance of the loss is captured in not only the melody but the lyricism as well. meelu explains: “‘candlelight’ is a song about grief, but also about celebration. It reflects the sacredness of loving and being loved, and the importance of honouring the people we’ve lost by continuing to live fully.”
Produced by RAFFER, with mixing by Dominic Peters and mastering by Streaky, ‘candlelight’ follows meelu’s well-received 2025 single, ‘hi “love”’. Finding the line between ambient electronic grooves and acoustic influences, the track is a slew of instruments all flowing across in a united wave of sound. A slip of horns brings a glistening shine to the synth-driven wave underlined with a pulsating drum beat. Meelu’s soft vocals dance across proudly, yet with a subtlety that leans toward openness, intimacy, and vulnerability.
Overall, the pop-filled melody with folk-inspired lyricism and a chilling, but simultaneously hopeful, ambience, ‘candlelight’ is a song embracing the boldness of candlelight and enjoying the warm, simple, fiery glow.
