Natasha Ghosh – More Love (2021)

Hitting our virtual desk once again, the stunning Natasha Ghosh brings her attitude and soulfulness to our ears. Based in the Netherlands, the 20-something singer-songwriter fills contemporary pop with undertones of R&B, hip-hop and soul. Reminiscent of Demi Lovato, Fiona Apple and Avril Lavigne, Ghosh’s sound is highly sophisticated despite having formed only last year. The latest addition to her critically acclaimed discography is the single ‘More Love’.

Following her R&B-influenced single ‘Hold Me’ (read our review here), ‘More Love’ leans toward a lo-fi meets dance beat below her moving pop vocals. Joining forces with Terrence Pledger in Japan, this single is the result of remote collaboration – something that is becoming more evident over the past year. Beautifully layered and textured, this electronic single (for lack of a better word) has a simplistic edge to the melody. While Ghosh is known for her ukelele, the steady beats nod to contemporary artists like M.I.A., Jessie J and Ariana Grande.

Yes, the track has the taste of dance-inspired styles, however, Ghosh showcases her soulfulness in the heartwarming vocals. I have mentioned the similarity to Avril Lavigne but there is a Haley Williams-esque charm to Ghosh’s silky voice in ‘More Love’ – think of a softer, more synth-influenced and less rock-influenced ‘Decode’.

As with most of her tracks, Ghosh explores the realm of personal relationships in this latest single. According to Ghosh, ‘More Love’ “is about somebody who admits flaws in the relationship due to lack of communication but is keen on fixing it”. The lyrical depth already points to the fragility in human nature, but it is the soaring vocals that add a haunting vulnerability. Fortunately, while there is a disconcerting painfulness in the song, Ghosh adds a lingering optimism and empowerment at the end…the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.
