When corporate burnout meets artistic expression, we have Nath Tavares. Raised in a musical family, the zealous spark for music came early, and by the age of nine she “already knew music would define her life”. At age 15, she wrote and produced her first album, followed by years of musical theatre with major roles in Kiss Me, Kate and Thoroughly Modern Millie – all shaping her depth and skill as a performer.
So, what about that corporate burnout?
The path veered when Tavares studied Communication and Consumer Behaviour at the University of Southern California, earned an MBA at INSEAD, and built a successful, global career in the corporate sector. Yet, that zealous musical flame continued to simmer like burning embers in her heart, and she found herself at that intersection. Determined to follow her dreams, Tavares changed Zoom calls and spreadsheets for a stage and recording studio. This return to music was “the realisation that achievement without authenticity feels incomplete.” Join us as we delve into her recent album, See Attachment.
Almost a chronicle or melodic autobiography, See Attachment is an intimate, personal, immersive, and relatable sonic experience. Opening with a hint of her Brazilian origins, the title track uses a traditional Latin guitar and backing horns. Her rich, honey-soaked vocals soar across the melody, but it is the witty, amusing lyricism that sets the stage with the rejection of a corporate world. I particularly enjoy the spoken-word moment when HR personnel tell her that she hasn’t been accepted and should try applying for the job in the future.
Heading to ‘Fooled’, the smooth pop tone is smashed by a hard-hitting urban bounce. The bold beats dance around Tavares rap, and the lyrics, “think I’ve finally found my purpose” and “you gotta break things…” showcase that crashing point of burnout – a landslide of both relief and fear without any clear future, but eager to step into the unknown. In her Portuguese lyric ‘Clutter’, the bewildered confusion is palpable with innovative world music.
Throughout See Attachment, we are not only taken on a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment, but also entwined with vulnerability and stomach-dropping “what is going to happen?” We are shown Tavares’ versatility and innovation. Hip-hop and rap, with soothing pop ballads flowing in songs like ‘All On Me’. Portuguese and English lyrics note not only Tavares’ diverse background, but an intimate connection with international audiences.
It’s not easy to choose a favourite track on See Attachment as each plays a particular role in the tale, from dejection and despair to empowerment and following your own rules. If I had to choose, it would more than likely be ‘Key Takeaways’ – bold, powerful and confident, with Tavares vocals adding the extra punch and an almost “well, stuff society”. Highly recommended!!
