Neo Brightwell – Break Me Like A Promise (2026)

Playing what he describes as “Moonshine disco”, Neo Brightwell finds the intersection between music, poetry and performance, engulfing listeners in songs that are emotional and heartfelt, but with a dance-ready vibe. Instead of singing a song for, well, just the sake of putting some words to music, Brightwell approaches each track as ”…an act of witness… as part of a larger conversation”. The latest addition to his story book of musical chapters is ‘Break Me Like A Promise’.

Following his album, We Didn’t Survive To Be Quiet, ‘Break Me Like A Promise’ is the first taste of Brightwell’s upcoming album, Burn Bright, Stay Free. Across the album, Brightwell writes for people who ”…survived tenderness as a contact sport: queer kids who grow up in the church, romantics who have outlived their own optimism, anyone who has ever danced to remember and to forget at the exact same time.” With ‘Break Me Like A Promise’, he looks at finding truth and comfort in lonely brokenness. Brightwell shares, “It’s a slow-burning heartbreak anthem that asks a simple but uncomfortable question: if love has to end, can it at least end honestly… It’s about surviving tenderness without hardening into cynicism…”

Self-recorded and produced, ‘Break Me Like A Promise’ is a rather abstract, obscure song. If you had to categorise it, then it might fall into an Americana or country genre; however, there is a lot more otherness to the track. An odd sense of trudging exudes from the steady drumbeat, like an anchor in a sparse desert. The guitar doesn’t necessarily soar, but it flutters across, giving a rock-tinged flair. The most significant instrument for me is the interspersed banjo. While it doesn’t hold prominence, its twangy nature brings a heavier, almost “demon walking in the bayou” feel.

Finding the line between a New Orleans vicar preaching and a sleek kid sitting on the porch with a glint in his eye, ‘Break Me Like A Promise’ is inspiring and a little creepy. It’s strange, but I highly recommend the oddity.
