Queera Nightly – The Girl Who Fell (2021)

Life is a strange and curious thing filled with joy, tragedy, confusion and clarity, but dealing with all of this can be tiring. In fact, it can be more than tiring, it can be frustrating and painful. Truly knowing yourself is a goal hard to reach, but there are those who have a deeper insight to answer the question “who am I”. Queera Nightly is one of these people.

Growing up in a highly religious household, Nightly often felt stifled and struggled to understand their identity. Embracing music as a means of self-expression, they were able to manifest the emotional turmoil through creativity. Taking this cathartic outlet to the masses, Nightly has received critical acclaim for their previous work from publications like Essentially Pop, American Pancake and various online radio stations. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘The Girl Who Fell’.

Following the blues-inspired single ‘Summoning’, ‘The Girl Who Fell’ is an Americana-influenced testament to personal journeys. With the intimacy of Bob Dylan, the warming vocals of Florence Welch and an almost inexplicable underlying intensity, Nightly ensnares one’s senses with their soulful sound.

“I’ve worn different masks throughout my life: the devoted follower, the politician, the wayward soul. At times I felt more at ease behind a mask, safe from people’s judgement of who I really was. I thought that that would keep me safe, but it only made me feel more and more alone. I felt confined to a box of who I could be and once I left that box I never could go back.” – Queera Nightly on ‘The Girl Who Fell’.

Highly evocative and emotional, ‘The Girl Who Fell’ is a heartfelt track filled with an impassioned melancholy. While the dynamic guitars and drums create a wistful soundscape, the poignant lyricism shows depth amid the toe-tapping swirl of sound. Using a third-person narrative from the perspective of an onlooker into their inner conflict and turmoil, Nightly enhances the seriousness of the core theme. Yet, as the melody fills you with rustic warmth, it is their vocals that send shivers down one’s spine with a lingering sentimentality and sincerity.
