Robby and the Secret – Save A Prayer (2022)

With the aim of creating music to touch a person’s soul, Robby and the Secret is a collective of artists with a unique sound. Influenced by a plethora of musicians ranging from The Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd and Nick Cave, the Amsterdam-based trio is “cinematic, atmospheric, pure and honest…” Featured on various playlists and magazines, Robby and the Secret are turning heads on an international scale. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the single ‘Save A Prayer’.

Skirting the fringes of grunge, alternative pop, psychedelic rock and Americana, these professional musicians bring a powerful roots sound to their fans. Following their track ‘Bones’, Robby and the Secret release a cover version of Duran Duran’s ‘Save A Prayer’. Bringing an old-school folk tinged with 90s pop, the single is a softer, more soothing and intriguing take on Duran Duran’s classic. Charming and elegant, the lads weave together a kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry with pianos, strings, drums and guitars.

Recorded with engineer Menno Bakker, ‘Save A Prayer’ has a cinematic and haunting tone, as heard in the original; however, Robby and the Secret bring a harmonic beauty to the song. Piano-driven with gentle strings, guitars and drums, this version of ‘Save A Prayer’ is delicate, light and flowing with an acoustic-inspired vibe. Is it because the musicians are older and appreciate old-school sounds? Perhaps, but I think the move from Duran Duran’s synth-pop style to a traditional folk style just shows an appreciation of good music.

Unlike the obscure single ‘Bones’, ‘Save A Prayer’ has a delicacy, fragility and charm that is almost indescribable. Soft and alluring, but oozing with passion, Robby and the Secret have outdone Duran Duran with their version of this iconic song.
