Russell Thomas – No Matter The Crime (2022)

With the aim of bringing people together through music, singer-songwriter Russell Thomas spins heartfelt tales in his emotive music. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Thomas has a strong appreciation for musicians who “have an ability to share their feelings openly in their music laying themselves bare…” With features on BBC Radio and several playlists, his music is reaching the masses on a global scale. Come with us as we look (or rather listen) to his latest release, ‘No Matter The Crime’.

The first song to be released since ‘Turbulent Skies’ in 2022, ‘No Matter The Crime’ adopts an indie-folk sound with tinges of pop in the arrangement – more folk than pop though. The soothing, soft and gentle single has a laidback vibe twirling you about in a kaleidoscopic haze. ‘No Matter The Crime’ is a sophisticated, self-produced single; however, Thomas’ depth is shown in the juxtaposition between lyrics and melody. While there is a cheery soundscape, the track actually touches on suicide and the overall consequences.

Oddly enough, songs about anxiety, angst and the inner turmoil leading to suicide have us looking at the situation from the perspective of the person wanting to take their life – it’s not often we look at the consequences. The obvious consequence of suicide is loss of life, but what about the emotional state of those being left behind? In ‘No Matter The Crime’, we take a look at these emotions. Thomas explains that “the lyrics were inspired by someone close who took their life. The song is about learning to forgive someone you love for taking their life and learning to live without them in your life.”

Intricate, complex and filled with sentimentality, Russell Thomas explores human fragility with his tender single ‘No Matter The Crime’. Is suicide the crime? Perhaps, but Thomas shares forgiveness and acceptance in this new song.
