Scott Rocco – Wish You Well (2021)

If Billy Joel were to have a lovechild with Bruce Springsteen and it was raised by Goo Goo Dolls, the chances are Scott Rocco would be it. Adding a grittiness to a smooth alternative rock sound, Rocco brings an edgy slant to traditional toe-tapping rock. Known for his skills as a singer-songwriter, the US-based multi-instrumentalist is currently enjoying life as a solo artist. With experience in bands, Rocco sees “playing in a band as very special”, but it is his solo project that has caught our eye.

Already an award-winning musician, Scott Rocco holds weight in the music industry with performances at Rockwood Music Hall, the Bowery Electric and The BitterEnd. His music has featured on various television shows, radio stations and music publications across the globe. The latest addition to his well-received discography is the single ‘Wish You Well’.

One of the songs from his upcoming conceptual album Ignited, scheduled for release in 2022, ‘Wish You Well’ is a robust pop-rock ballad with some country undertones. Highly reminiscent of John Waite with some Billy Joel twinges, ‘Wish You Well’ seems to transport me back to the 1980s/1990s pop world. Adopting a heavier sound as compared to the country-inspired single ‘Sum of You’, Rocco showcases his versatility and evolution as a singer-songwriter.

What I love about ‘Wish You Well’ is the smoothness of the track from melody to lyricism. The harmonic combination of guitar, piano and drums (courtesy of Russ de Luca) plunges you into a slick, hazy swirl of music. Floating easily into a warm blanket of sound, ‘Wish You Well’ is a kaleidoscopic soundscape for people who want to just “chill”. Yet, while there is a calm atmosphere about the single, the lyricism shows a more poignant side to the song.

In line with the laidback, entrancing melody, the lyricism is about empowerment, acceptance and revival. According to Rocco, ‘Wish You Well’ “is about finally letting someone go, wishing the best for that person but being forever grateful for the light and love they brought into your life”. I have mentioned its poignancy, but I’d like to add sincerity and genuineness to the positive poignancy of the track…does that make sense? Moreover, Rocco’s rich vocals enhance the sentimentality of the soul-stirring single.

Filled to the brim with honesty, Scott Rocco shares his tender, sensitive side with the world in ‘Wish You Well’.
