Sarah Brown – Liability (2020)

Described as “soulful and effortless” (BBC Introducing), “powerful and mesmerising” (Wolf In A Suit) and “a one to watch” (Buzz Magazine), Sarah Brown has a great future ahead of her. But wait, why am I telling you about her future when I should be talking about the present? Here is her latest track ‘Liability’.

Hailing from the UK, the South Wales songstress has received much acclaim for her music. Using a DIY approach, this independent artist self-releases all her tracks which must be good considering the consistent coverage on BBC Radio Wales and other online media. With a strong reputation and growing following, Brown is on her way to stardom. Now, what about ‘Liability’?

In my opinion, pop is just pop. When I was younger, pop was my life with Westlife and the Backstreet Boys on repeat. Considering the mind-numbing mass-produced contemporary pop world nowadays, it’s difficult to get on board with anything. Yes, there are breakout artists trying to redefine the world of pop, such as Billie Eilish, but pop is still just…pop. Sarah Brown may be pop, but she’s got a little “something extra” to her sound.

One for the four releases planned for the latter half of 2020, ‘Liability’ is a powerful pop track with strong RnB influences. The layering of vocals over keys makes it a well-textured and melodic single. In ‘Liability’, Brown moves from the smoother and steadier sounds of ‘Fool For Love’ while retaining her soulful vocals reminiscent of Florence & The Machine and Joss Stone.

Looking at her music in entirety, Brown has a much stronger jazz/soul vibe than the typical pop design. While maintaining a simple, heartfelt sincerity, Brown’s vocals are forceful and scream self-empowerment. ‘Liability’ is merely an example of how Brown is bringing a contemporary flavour to old-school pop.
