Scuttlebuggs – Trout Town (2022)

We all have our personal demons that we need to fight in order to live our lives. This battle has been taken up by Scuttlebuggs for their soul-bearing single ‘Trout Town’. A single packed with reflection on our personal demons, it uses a melody that gets you dancing to soften the intimacy. Mixing toe-tapping beats with vulnerable vocals, the band truly captures the struggles that we all face each day.

This intimate yet danceable single comes from the musical brains of Claire Kander (guitar, bass, synth, harmonica) and Kevin Golden (guitar, bass, strings, keys). Together, they create unique melodies with a touch of experimental vibes that has slowly been capturing the hearts of listeners. The duo has had a successful tour of Japan and performed across the USA and plans more in the future.

‘Trout Town’ has you merrily bopping away to the beat from the first note. There is a rather laidback feeling in the warble of the high tones while the drums and guitars sway through your senses. It is almost impossible to stop the smile the melody causes to form on your lips as you bounce and sway to the melodic movement. The pulse of guitars that come later adds a great burst of texture to the music giving it a renewed bounce. It is a really fun melody that uses chilled vibes to their full extent while getting you endlessly hooked to the movement. Later in the track, there is a slightly psychedelic vibe that meanders in completely changing the feeling of the single. This is a smooth movement that adds a dynamic element to the single and is an absolute pleasure to listen to.

The easiness of the melody is picked up by the Golden’s vocals as they settle on your skin. While chilled, his performance is hiding something much deeper that calls to you from the depths of the lyrics. Kander’s harmonising backing vocals sigh through the single enhancing the softness of the track. While the lyrics acknowledge the demons inside all of us, they also lead us to potential solutions and the light at the end of the tunnel. As the melody changes in the latter parts of the single, the vocals retain some of their smoothness, but this is tempered with a hazier feeling.

Scuttlebuggs have you smiling to the chilled melody of ‘Trout Town’ as the lyrics get you thinking about inner demons and the light at the end of the tunnel. The single is wonderfully unique as it combines chilled vibes with inner demons and a swaying melody that you can’t help but move to. The vocals are smooth and bring an intimacy to the single while acknowledging our inner demons.
