Suzy Pine – Whispered Dreams (2026)
Originally reaching our eyes and ears as the alt-pop duo Lena & van Dorst, musicians Suzanne Pijpers and Pepijn van Dorst won us over with their singles ‘Astray’ and ‘Cool Inside’. As the year progressed, the duo continued to release songs, but Lena & van Dorst didn’t seem to fit the sound they wanted to bring to audiences; hence, Suzy Pine. Why mention that little tidbit? What does it have to do with anything? Not much, but it was our introduction to Pijpers and van Dorst, and introductions are important. Today we shift our gaze to Suzy Pine and the new single, ‘Whispered Dreams’.
The first track as Suzy Pine, ‘Whispered Dreams’ is a song of sincerity, honesty, and connection. Produced by van Dorst and Pijpers, with mastering by Maria Triana, ‘Whispered Dreams’ isn’t exactly easy to categorise – a blur of sound as the Dutch duo saunter through various realms of pop. Eclectic and obscure, the track is predominantly electronic, with van Dorst’s synth pad pulsating in the background, yet simultaneously creating a smooth, soft, gentle foundation. David de Marez Oyens’ bass guitar weaves and boldly steps in the single. Organic titters of Bart Hulsebosch’s percussion bring a folk-flavoured flutter to lighten the melody.
Melodically, ‘Whispered Dreams’ is a sophisticated waltz of sound – patient and deliberate, with a strange, palpable tension wafting in the arrangement. Interestingly, it is this particular sensation that brilliantly aligns with the core theme of the track. Delving into a complex relationship, ‘Whispered Dreams’ focuses on that wistful emotion of knowing you’re with the wrong person at the wrong time but never wanting love to fade. Pijpers explains:
“This song was written during a time when I was involved in a quite impossible love story. I was trying to hold on to something, someone, who was slipping through my fingers like sand, while watching the sun going down together. We would be on a beach whispering about our dreams and a future together, knowing that would never actually happen.”
