The Margaret Hooligans – Revenge Of The ScarJo (2023)

You know when you have a song stuck in your head and you can’t wriggle it out as much as you wish. You just have to listen to it, or you might die – alright, a bit of an exaggeration but you know what I mean. For me, The Margaret Hooligans is that band with ‘What Kind Of Donut Are You?’ being the song; but, then again, anything from The Margaret Hooligans can infect your brain until you can’t stand it. Needless to say, I’m a fan – either that or I’m a sucker for punishment. Both?

Insatiable and indescribable, The Margaret Hooligans have a sound and style that is entirely The Margaret Hooligans. Combining the talents of Mr Strontium (backing vocals, drums and percussion) and Meg Cratty (lead vocals, electric ukelele and electric guitar), the US-based duo burst with rambunctious pizzaz in each single tossing you about, holding you close, and letting your soul soar higher than ever before.

Most well-known for the profoundness of their provocative themes, the US-based duo are unafraid to tackle the touchiest of subjects. ‘Witch On The Corner’ shared a harsh tale of “gentrification wrapped in family myth”, and ‘Our Museum Of Failure’ explored gender fluidity in a patriarchal society – “a hymn to lost little boys trying to navigate what it means to be a man in an age where we are trying to dismantle the patriarchy.” ‘Revenge Of The ScarJo’ wades through society exploring sexual harassment and gender equality (or inequality). The band explains:

“’Revenge Of The ScarJo’ imagines a world in which men are subjected to the same sexual harassment that women commonly experience… Meg Cratty’s vocals taunt you with phrases of victim blaming that women have heard for decades – ‘equality starts with catcalling, but you didn’t like it, did you?’… We realise the script has been flipped…”

Recorded and produced at Piety Street Publishing by Mr Strontium, with mastering by KRAMER of Shiny Disc Records, ‘Revenge Of The ScarJo’ is the second single from the band’s album ThunderHole Rock n’ Roll. Following the single ‘Monkey Nuts’, a collaboration between The Margaret Hooligans and The Qwarks, the track hits you between the eyes with a sonic mallet. Brash and bold, the abrupt blast of crashing drums collides with scorching guitars while shimmers of percussion flit about the melody. Oddly enough, the distortion and uncomfortable nature of the melody has a kaleidoscopic flow beneath Cratty’s rich, biting vocals; so, you feel ill at ease but simultaneously completely at your leisure.

In addition to the single, The Margaret Hooligans released an official music video for ‘Revenge Of The ScarJo’. You can view it below or via their YouTube channel.
