Luna Keller- Ocean Inside Of Me (2023)

With a reputation for profound intricacy wrapped in warm tenderness, singer-songwriter Luna Keller’s melodies are rich, bold and intimate. If you take a quick gander at The Other Side Reviews, you will find Luna Keller has captivated our senses since 2020 and continues to astound us. When we left her, review-wise that is, she collaborated with Clouds And Thorns in the upbeat folk-pop single ‘Live It All’. Before that, she serenaded us with ‘Home In My Heart’. Today, she returns with the single ‘Ocean Inside Of Me’.

Focusing on the core of human experiences, including all the grimy stuff, ‘Ocean Inside Of Me’ tackles the emotional side of mental health. The title track from her upcoming concept album, ‘Ocean Inside Of Me’ is part of an overarching story where Keller takes us on her journey of dealing with depression. She explains:

“The concept album tells a story from darkness to light written on my mental health journey and on my way back story to self-love… This song is deeply personal… It’s a story of transformation and resilience, a reminder that no one is alone in their struggles. ‘Ocean Inside Of Me’ captures a moment of solitude and introspection, a heavy yet cathartic encounter with inner demons…”

Recorded with California-based producer Dominic Romano, the album has been two years in the making – a real labour of love. Driven by an acoustic piano, ‘Ocean Inside Of Me’ has a barebones attitude with melancholic vocals matching a tender flowing melody. While the soundscape is sparse with a piano taking prominence, drums and guitars wrap themselves about its thread in the catchy choruses. Simplistic, no doubt, but a kaleidoscopic whimsy makes the song bold and forceful in its stripped-back approach.

I find the melody particularly interesting as it captures the core of dealing with mental health problems. The piano is Keller’s mind with the hushed drums and acoustic guitar slipping in as inner demons attempting to take control. Keller’s steady vocals navigate the scene travelling along in a vulnerable state; however, just as we think the twirl of instrumentation is about to take hold, everything flips with a sad but hopeful sound changing the melodic despair.

In addition to the single, Keller released an official music video for ‘Ocean Inside My Head’. You can view the video below or via her YouTube channel.
