Track of the Day: Caleb Cascio – Roller Coaster

Inspired by the likes of Ed Sheeran, Lewis Capaldi, Shawn Mendes, Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift, US-based Caleb Cascio has a strong contemporary pop sound. The thing is, while there is a pop basis, he melds old-school folk to the mix adding an edginess to his work. Already turning the heads of audiences for the past two years, Cascio is also turning critics’ heads with his interesting singles. Featured in Rattler Magazine, Stereo Stickman, Roadie Music and Indie Dock Music Blog (among others), Cascio is gaining a global reputation for engaging music. The latest addition to his discography is ‘Roller Coaster’.

Following his track ‘You’re Not Alone’, ‘Roller Coaster’ brings a bubble gum pink happiness to your life with its pop-ness. Smooth and soft, the single has a sense of simplicity that puts you at ease; however, the arrangement adds that hint of indie-folk to the tune. Known for his wide vocal range, Cascio has “baritone vocals with a surprise falsetto flair” which influences his passionate singles – as is evident in ‘Roller Coaster’. His dulcet tones both calm and excite you with the toe-tapping vibes. The falsetto flair is elegantly placed at the end leaving you with a grin on your face and your heart soaring.

Recorded with producer and multi-instrumentalist Owen Korzec, the melodic arrangement harmonically combines guitars, drums and percussion in a beautifully textured way. Tossing you into a swirl of joyful sound, there is an upbeat sensation with, as I mentioned, that smooth and soft quality.

While the melody holds its own as a charming sonic twinkle, it is the lyricism that highlights Cascio’s connection with modern-day audiences. Writing songs about relationships and life in general, Cascio uses his tracks to keep people calm and hopeful in an uncertain society. ‘Roller Coaster’ is about youthful romance – from meeting each other, through the honeymoon phase and beyond. Unlike many love songs that have a sense of despair as they look at the darker side of relationships, ‘Roller Coaster’ retains the positivity of romance. Cascio began his musical project performing covers of Taylor Swift’s songs and she would be over the moon with ‘Roller Coaster’.
