Track of the Day: noyou – We’re So Sorry

Bursting onto the North East music scene in early 2019, the indie-rock six-piece has gained critical acclaim from listeners, promoters and media alike. Featured on The Alternative Fix, BBC Introducing and NARC Magazine (to name a few), noyou is building a reputation for engaging lyrics over high-paced melodies. Describing themselves as “fuzzy, electronic, fun, pop, rock”, the Sunderland-based group are making a stand with their distinctive indie style. While their latest track is ‘Bored‘, we’re taking a look at one of our noyou favourites as Track of the Day – ‘We’re So Sorry’.

Originally beginning as a solo project for frontman and vocalist Connor Jobes, noyou soon evolved into a forceful live performance sextet. Combining the dynamic instrumentation with Jobes’ rich vocals, noyou’s full discography is robust and heartwarming. Yet, ‘We’re So Sorry’ takes the group away from their 80s synth-pop meets post-punk design incorporating more of a contemporary indie-pop style. This might be a result of the more complex production process introducing keys player Joey as a vocalist in the second verse, as well as using a group of friends as backing vocalists, but who really knows.

“‘We’re So Sorry’ looks to explore the recent happenings in the world regarding racism from the perspective of someone who doesn’t know what they can do to aid the progress. Throughout the whole thing all I found myself wanting to say was sorry. Sorry that the world is like this and people allow these things to happen.” – Connor Jobes (vocalist) on ‘We’re So Sorry’

One element I truly enjoy is the various lead vocals in ‘We’re So Sorry’. While the track retains the elegant vocal gymnastics from Jobes, Joey’s seemingly deeper voice adds a warmer and more engaging quality to the track. Despite the sensitive lyricism, the uplifting melody finds the delicate balance between poignant depth and hopeful optimism. All in all, it’s a catchy earworm that can be played over and over and over…
