Track of the Day: Redeemers – Venue Affair

Known for their energetic, passionate and powerful live performances, UK-based quintet Redeemers are a force to be reckoned with. Alright, so they have only just started releasing original music online, but this does not mean they haven’t been turning heads. Building a loyal following, the charismatic group are being praised by the likes of Thoughts Words Action and receiving airplay from Amazing Radio. Come with us as we dip our toe into the revolutionary indie-rock band’s debut single…come on!

With tinges of Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes in the track, Redeemers immediately have you jumping about from the first chord of ‘Venue Affair’. Hard-hitting guitars meld perfectly with pounding drums to tip you into a kaleidoscopic whirlpool of sound. While there is a rock-inspired clarity to the melody, ‘Venue Affair’ appears to be filled with a hazy ambience as you swirl about with lights flitting before your face. Eoin Harkin’s lead guitar is one of the prominent features in ‘Venue Affair’ adding chest-pounding guitar riffs to connect the catchy choruses with engaging verses.

Yes, the melody can stand on its own as something outstanding, but the vocal execution is what slaps you in the face – in a good way. Fronted by the charismatic Matty McCallum, the almost spoken word vocals really bring the track home with a strong Manchester indie-rock design. Backing up his bravado, Jacob Jones (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), Connor Doyle (bass guitar), Eoin Harkin (lead guitar) and Jake Byrne (drums) enhance the fiery passion oozing from Redeemers.

The blistering instrumentation could make you think Redeemers is just a group of great instrumentalists; however, a deeper layer is unearthed when it comes to the concept of ‘Venue Affair’. Touching on the issue of escapism in our uncertain society, Harkin explains that ‘Venue Affair’ looks at “…the thought of that feeling of youthful escapism; finding that little getaway spot where things are a bit different, you can have a laugh and enjoy yourself…the world doesn’t exist anymore…all those problems you had before are just white noise…”

So, what do I really think of Redeemers and their debut single ‘Venue Affair’? Passionate, powerful and a little frenzied, listening to the track is like having several vodka shots followed by a tequila chaser. What is particularly interesting is while there is slight chaos to ‘Venue Affair’, it retains an elegant sophistication – these lads certainly know what they’re doing. Pass the tequila!
