Track of the Day: Sarah Brunner – Something Else (2026)

Known for her confident, engaging performances that can leave an audience with that “wow, that was cool” feeling, Sarah Brunner is an exceptional live artist. However, just as her stage presence is remarkable, so are her studio releases. As one half of the US-based duo The Hipocrats, Brunner has released critically acclaimed albums, toured extensively throughout the USA, opened for artists like Will Hoge, worked with industry professionals including Chance McCoy, and is quickly building a loyal international fanbase. Yet, while this singer-songwriter has experienced success with The Hipocrats, it is her solo project that draws our fancy. The latest addition to her solo discography is the single, ‘Something Else’.

Following her 2021 single ‘Caravan’, featuring Tyler McGinnis, ‘Something Else’ is Brunner’s first studio release in five years. Joined by Karen Peters (cello), Dune Butler (bass) and Michael Knight (drums), ‘Something Else’ is a rhythmic rush of soothing music. Soft, gentle and charming, the strings weave together seamlessly, creating a tune that has intricacy, yet within its ease offers a simplicity that sits comfortably in your heart. The drums, however, don’t rush or weave; an anchor in this folk song. Light and fluffy, but with a deliberate steadiness and a whispered patience, ‘Something Else’ is tender and chilled-out.

While the melody of ‘Something Else’ is enjoyable, it is Brunner’s vocals that make you feel truly at home. Raw and vulnerable with a gentle peace, her dulcet voice holds you close – a hug from an old friend. Interestingly, as this comforting sentiment exists in her delivery, the track tackles feelings of anxiety and yearning. She explains:

“’Something Else’… explores the feeling of growing apart in a screen-saturated world, where technology, social media, and the constant pressure to work can pull people away from genuine human connection. It captures what it’s like to watch someone you care about become consumed by distractions, while still holding onto the hope of reconnecting. At its core, ‘Something Else’ expresses a longing for presence and a deeper connection beyond the noise of everyday digital life.”

Sincere and tender, Sarah Brunner ends our Friday with an easy, rhythmic folk song. Being the first track off her upcoming EP, I am eager to hear more from this talented musician.
