The Other Side Reviewstrack of the day

Track of the Day: Satellite Train – Broken Heart

Initially, a fun side project to keep their love for music flowing, Satellite Train wasn’t anything too grand. As time passed and things changed the collaborative project becoming a bigger, more intriguing endeavour. Draw together some of the greatest musical talents from Australia and the United States, and you have a sophisticated blast of classic rock with a flush of jazz and pop mixed in the sound. Led by Australian singer-songwriter Michael Paynter, Satellite Train began releasing music earlier this year with their debut track being ‘Broken Heart’.

Preceding well-received singles like ‘Lies’ and ‘Love My Way’, Satellite Train adopts a strong classic rock meets pop sound in ‘Broken Heart’. Combining pounding drums, powerful guitars and interspersed piano there is a hard-hitting quality to the track, however, a soothing tone is woven through the melody. A harmonic balance lies between Michael Paynter’s gruff vocals and Susan Turner’s softer, gentler voice. Interestingly enough, while a balance exists between these two vocals, it is also the contrast that adds a haunting, obscure and heart-stopping quality to ‘Broken Heart’.

Rich, robust and full-bodied, Satellite Train is an international project showing musicians at their best. With ‘Broken Heart’, Satellite Train tosses you into a sonic whirlpool twirling about with kaleidoscopic lights flashing before your eyes. It is a warm hug but also a cold push; a soft touch but simultaneously a gritty grabbing of your collar making you listen to the music.

So, what do I think about Satellite Train and ‘Broken Heart’? In one word: sublime. The spine-tingling melody is carefully crafted around heart-wrenching vocals leaving you with a mind-blowing mixing pot of music.
