Track of the Day: SERENA – Heartworm

Raised in Italy but now based in the UK (London to be precise), singer-songwriter SERENA is inspired by her multicultural settings and background creating unique music. She embraced music at a young age, slowly and steadily building her skills to the point where she is making podcasts, producing her own material and collaborating with various artists. One example is her collaboration with Netflix-synced Andrea Di Giovanni on the club anthem ‘Leave It’. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Heartworm’.

Known for her energetic and engaging music, SERENA’s repertoire is bold, rich and powerful. The first release of 2022, ‘Heartworm’ sprinkles the tenderness of pop-rock across a strong alt-rock sound. Filled with dynamic guitars, drums and synths, the melodic instrumentation carries SERENA’s unique vocals. Obscure, with a bit of Alanis Morrissette and Bjork vibes, her voice has a spine-chilling haunting within the song. Following her debut EP Welcome To Wasteland (released in 2021), ‘Heartworm’ is an evolution of SERENA’s musical artistry.

While the melody can hold its own among the most prolific artists, SERENA’s depth and innovation are seen in her lyricism. ‘Heartworm’ touches on toxic relationships, a need for independence, and the painful despair clinging to these issues. She explains that “within the medical field, heartworm is an animal disease…a parasite that takes home in their heart killing them with a slow and painful death. I’ve always been fascinated by this word and translated the concept into a relationship that you can’t get out of your head, which you thought had faded a long time ago but is still somehow alive and consuming you.”

Sincere, powerful, sentimental and reflective, SERENA’s new single explores human fragility in a brutally raw way.
