Victors – How Can You Just Turn It Off? (2021)

Yorkshire pop trio Victors’ brand new single ‘How Can You Just Turn It Off?’ Is a heartfelt dive into heartbreak heaven. The melodious track is a tear-jerker that will have you reaching for the tissues while thinking about past relationships and what went wrong. It was released as a teaser to the band’s new EP titled III. The EP is chronologically ordered, depicting the highs and lows of a relationship and the journey one half of it takes in self-reflection. There are seven songs on the EP and ‘How Can You Just Turn It Off?’ is the fourth track. That means it sits slap-bang in the middle of the relationship journey.

The tune imbues catchy-shout-along-to-pop at its best. It starts off stripped back with a delicate, immovable and clacking echoey beat. Vocals enter painting the scene as it unfolds. The singer talks of a lover packing their bags – “I guess you’re not mine”, they sing. Soft electronic mounds of sound flutter to the beat. The lamenting, youthful male voice lifts with a rising tide of music. The beat becomes more intricate and driving during the song’s earworm chorus, the vocals more heartbroken and emotional. The singer asks as the chorus peaks, “What’s going on? What happened to our love? How can you just turn it off?”

The song is filled with highs and lows, the musical ups and downs mimicking its words. The singer jumps from fond memories of the past to a broken-hearted and devastating present. The strong sense of narrative in the song fits with the band’s wider EP, vividly depicting this chapter in the seven-part story of love, loss and self-realisation. Like a tantalizing movie trailer, the single draws you into the love saga that so seductively awaits.

‘How Can You Just Turn It Off?’ Is one of those songs that will invoke memory montages in your mind. It exudes nostalgia with sentimentality and romanticism sprinkled throughout.
