A Chat with Trigger Mafia (08.12.21)

Inspired by acts like Rush, Triumph and Coney Hatch, Canada-based foursome Trigger Mafia bring old-school rock to modern-day scenes with a unique twist. We speak to Shawn Meehan about the band’s debut album The Brotherhood, the Covid-19 pandemic and future plans!

OSR: How did Trigger Mafia come about?

Meehan: We started soon after the Covid-19 Pandemic began. Playing together was only meant to be what we call “Rock and Roll Therapy” and it ended up turning into so much more!

OSR: What can you tell us about your debut album The Brotherhood?

Meehan: The Brotherhood is a diverse collection of songs exploring our “Rock and Roll Therapy” sessions and a few self-indulgent instrumentals. We also say that the album brings an answer to a lost world, is a light for leadership and a guide to life.

OSR: Do you have a favourite track?

Meehan: Yes, the title track, ‘The Brotherhood Song’. It was a song truly written from the heart that paid tribute to our best friends.

OSR: What about a least favourite track?

Meehan: We don’t really have a least favourite. We wouldn’t put anything on the record that we didn’t enjoy or believe in.

OSR: Did you face any challenges when recording and producing the album?

Meehan: Not really. This project started with low expectations but seemed to take on a life of its own. Very smooth experience, really.

OSR: What do you hope people take from The Brotherhood?

Meehan: An exhilarating rock and roll journey!

OSR: If you could perform with any living artist, who would it be and why?

Meehan: Deep Purple! The entire band are all huge fans and we would love to watch them in action every night!

OSR: Do you believe the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the music industry? If yes, how?

Meehan: It certainly has affected us. This band and album would certainly not have happened without Covid. As far as affecting the industry as a whole, it might be too early to tell.

OSR: Which do you find more difficult: lyrics or melody?

Meehan: It depends on who you ask in the band, but I find lyrics much more difficult than melodies. I’m always hearing melodies in my head *laughs*

OSR: What can we expect from Trigger Mafia in the future?

Meehan: Non-stop content! We’re releasing new music videos every 4 to 6 weeks to promote our current album. We also might have a new EP or album to release by next summer!
