A Project Called Love – Chance Encounter (2026)
Travelling between Germany and the USA (California to be exact), A Project Called Love is exactly what it says on the tin: a project called love. Binding elements of reggae, indie, punk, pop, grunge and all sorts of styles, this project called love brings you “music you love, and love knows no genre”. This is my introduction to the musical collective, so I don’t really know what to expect, and I should maybe expect the unexpected? Join us as we take a head-first dive into A Project Called Love’s single, ‘Chance Encounter’.
Produced by Julian Schneid, ‘Chance Encounter’ shifts from the reggae vibes of ‘Smack Dab In The Middle’ to a brand of Britpop mixed with grunge. Dragging listeners back to the 1990s with the grittiness of Nirvana, the flow of Oasis, and the cheek of Dodgy, the track is fully old-school. However, as ‘Chance Encounter’ breathes life into vintage rock-tinged music, it also has a contemporary flair, inviting audiences from yesteryear and the present day to enjoy.
While each instrument has a particular individuality in ‘Chance Encounter’, the song is harmonious despite its grungy melodic distortion. Dennis Aubele’s heavy drums pulsate in the background as Jay Hope’s bold bass steps along with an “alright, this is just what I’m doing” attitude. Hope’s acoustic guitar inserts delicacy, intimacy, and acts as a gentle sonic embrace, while his gritty vocals bring a vulnerable naivety with a rough edge. For me, however, it is Julian Schneid’s cello that ups the ante. It might only be peeping from behind the sonic brush, like a shy fairy with glittering light, but there’s something about that veiled element that plucks at my heart.
Melodically, ‘Chance Encounter’ is a touching few minutes of music that seems to ebb and flow, giving you a sense of relief but also unpacking vulnerability in a melancholy way. Capturing the magic of unexpected moments in life, serendipitously by nature, ‘Chance Encounter’ is a memorable journey borne of, well, a chance encounter. Highly recommended!
