Ari Voxx – Sorrowphile (2026)
While her current musical style traverses the realms of pop with a glitter of dream-pop fluttering in the soundscape, singer-songwriter Ari Voxx is far more than a pink, bubble-gum pop princess. Accompanied by her band, The Sad Lads, Voxx’s musical project encompasses experiences and influences from jazz, punk, classical, shoegaze and disco. Moreover, her diversity is reflected in her lyricism and profound themes including mental health awareness, alienation, self-identity and loss. Ari Voxx’s discography hails back to the 2020 EP Cadence, but this is my introduction to the artist. Join me as I jump headfirst into ‘Sorrowphile’.
Produced by Ryan Boshart, mastered by Inner Ear Studios, and penned and composed by Ari Voxx, ‘Sorrowphile’ is solidly pop; however, the hyped pop anthem is juxtaposed with a darker, heavier message. Cyndi Lauper sang that “girls just want to have fun”, but Voxx questions what that fun is. Instead of heading out with the ladies, getting calls at midnight, and generally worrying your parents because you just want to rock out, Voxx turns the tables with that madness being the depressive force for sorrowphiles. A sorrowphile is a “sadness enthusiast” or “lover of feeling morose”; leave them to dwell in morbid reverie or discontent, and it’s all good.
Following the soulful new wave single ‘Astronauta’, ‘Sorrowphile’ is a bright, bouncy, toe-tapping sweep of Taylor Swift pop music. Cheerful and bursting with kaleidoscopic glitter, Voxx has you dancing along and twirling about with a grin on your face. Yet, as much as her rich vocals weave into the bold beats and synth-driven track, an obscure vulnerability shimmers in the background. It’s as if you know you should be happy and loving the fun, but there’s something poignant and profound lingering in the song.
Sincere, sentimental and all-out fun, I find it amusing that ‘Sorrowphile’ plays perfectly as background music when you’re getting all glammed up for a night on the town. Then again, remember what it’s all about and perhaps it could be the theme song for a night in front of the television and existential issues. Either way, ‘Sorrowphile’ and Ari Voxx are highly recommended.
