Sweet Mess – The Warning (2026)
From their debut single, ‘Midnight Knows My Name’, to ‘Let’s Just Go’ and the most recent ‘The Warning’, Sweet Mess quickly became one of my favourite bands. Considering I’m a fan of Halestorm and Evanescence, it makes sense that I would fall in love with Sweet Mess’ hard rock flair; however, just as there are similarities to powerhouse bands, the US-based group holds a particular distinction where you can say “oh, that’s Sweet Mess, how do you not know about them?” The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘The Warning’.
Following the well-received single ‘My Machine’, Sweet Mess retain the hard, heavy, powerful rock sounds in ‘The Warning’. Yet, while the crashes of rock pound in the melody, ‘The Warning’ is far less chaotic or frantic than ‘My Machine’. Produced by Michael Hayes and Larry Elyea, there is a deliberate heaviness in the new track. Hayes’ drums pulsate and crash, while Rob Watson’s bass beats and Fer Lopez’s guitar sweeps, soars and slices across. It’s difficult to explain, but the melody feels weighty and overwhelming, as if the aim is to drag you further into a morbid abyss. Sylvie’s rich vocals add to the darkness while still soaring across with honey-soaked intimacy.
While listening to ‘The Warning’, I found myself feeling worn-out, pulled down, and wilting in palpable tension. When looking at the song’s theme and message, the closing in of a darkness is perfectly understood. Exploring the concept of intuition, Sweet Mess delve into the darker, psychological issues of facing something, knowing what you should do, but also wondering whether doing what you instinctually should could evolve into another regret. The band explain:
“The track’s evocative lyrics grapple with a looming presence and a silent terror, challenging listeners to ask themselves if they are truly tuning in to what their intuition is telling them. The song warns that if you finally listen, you may get a premonition to regret… the track leaves audiences pondering a profound question: everyone gets a warning in their life, but do they recognise it when it happens?”
While ‘The Warning’ can leave a person feeling slightly uncomfortable, I think it’s a grand addition to Sweet Mess’ discography. I cannot wait for more.
