Aurora Scott – Phoenix (2023)

Embracing her passion for music as a child, singer-songwriter Aurora Scott knew she was going to be an amazing musician with sultry vocals, superb stage presence, and a general mastery of the art. Alright, maybe she didn’t know about the sultry vocals but it’s there and has taken her from the luxury cruise ship, The Queen Victoria, to the resident jazz singer of Island Shangri-La Hotel in Hong Kong, and a homecoming performance at the Halifax International Jazz Festival. This is my introduction to Aurora Scott, so join me as I dive into her musical masterpieces.

Over a decade since her 2012 debut full-length album Dance With You, Scott releases her latest single ‘Phoenix’. Recorded and produced alongside producer Jamie Robinson with mastering by Dave Gunning, ‘Phoenix’ showcases the beauty of a simplistic organic sound. Simple with a barebones quality, Scott’s new single captures hearts with basic guitars, percussion and clear vocals. Yet, just as it has a minimalistic starkness to the song, Scott throws a kaleidoscopic veil sending you twirling about with colourful sounds caressing your skin.

With a nostalgic lilt to old-school folk charm, there is a retro tenderness to ‘Phoenix’; however, a modern-day folk-pop vibe surrounds the song bringing us something fresh but familiar. A common thread transcending the decades is folk’s light-hearted intimacy in poetic but profound lyricism. Upbeat, toe-tapping and lifting, ‘Phoenix’ eloquently captures the theme of empowerment in its sound. A “spirited testimony to taking control of your life, overcoming adversity, and kicking ass…pure vocals, clear language, and skilful composition…are designed to uplift and inspire all people.”

Sincere, heartfelt, reflective and sentimental, Aurora Scott found the theme song for empowerment and optimism with ‘Phoenix’.
