Brett Copeland – Ruse (2020)

Brett Copeland drew us into the magnetic journey of his single ‘Your Paradise’ with an electrifying melody and charming vocals. He is now turning his musical power to the madmen and women who rule the world in ‘Ruse’. Drawing on current events, he turns your eye to the egos and thirst for power these people have. He also highlights how they don’t care about the human expense their thirst for power brings.

Teaming up with Justin Smolian for the single, the pair wrote, recorded and mixed it remotely. The idea was first brought to Copeland by Smolian days before the pandemic and ensuing lockdowns. Smolian, with his bandmates John Notto (guitar) and Corey Coverstone (drums), laid down the instrumentals before Copeland recorded the vocals after recovering from a severe throat infection. Through all this, they have been able to create a single with a timeless message and an addictive sound.

‘Ruse’ blasts you with a burst of shimmering energy from the opening note. This swirls into a steady beat with a zinging guitar line. The thundering drums and pulsing guitar lines draw you into the single effortlessly while getting your feet tapping. There is a bubbling and pulsing feeling to the music that perfectly captures the messaging of the lyrics. Through the instrumentation, you are pulled into the dark currents of power grabs and gaining power at any cost.

The vocals continue Copeland’s magnetic pull with his flawless falsetto. The higher line of vocals mixes with the momentum of the melody for a captivating combination. The clarity of his performance helps you fall into the lyrics. As the lyrics draw on current political and social events, they are extremely relatable while being ridiculously catchy. Like Copeland’s last single, you are going to want to play this track again and again as you get lost in it each time.
