Brick Turpin – Like Natural Materials Do (2026)
A tradesman writing songs about tradesmen for tradesmen (and all the others ready to discover new folk music), Brick Turpin uses common narratives to describe personal experiences and celebrate life as we know it. Turpin shares: “I use earthy and natural words common to describe the world around us rather than cold scientific rational descriptors.”, and, truthfully, this willingness to use natural words is what makes the UK-based singer-songwriter so authentic, honest, and relatable. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Like Natural Materials Do’.
The third track from his latest album Workday, ‘Like Natural Materials Do’ is just over two minutes of solid old-school folk music. Simplistic and acoustic-driven, the single is one of those songs that jump at you as a vivid, vibrant single to be felt and not only heard. With only his voice and a guitar, the song is not necessarily a rollercoaster event, but there is a strange sense of movement within the steady tone. It’s a heartfelt dance, so you know the track is bare-bones and sparse, yet it fills your heart, prompting you to sway, hum and think: “there’s a bit more to this than a basic folk song”.
Melodically, I can imagine Turpin sitting in the front room with his guitar in his hands, singing to a group of friends and family. However, as uncluttered as this is, the lyricism adds a sense of profound poignancy in the sincere, laid-back sound. Lying beneath the assumedly carefree surface, Turpin unpacks 21st-century society in all its digital era glory (is it glory, though?). Influencers, AI, social media, “plastics and mastics and goop”, looking for that disposable trend and following it without question.
So, overall, what is my opinion of Brick Turpin and ‘Like Natural Materials Do’? Honest and sincere, but it cuts to the bone with its openness. I’m unsure whether I’ll have the song on repeat, but it is something that’ll stick in my mind.
