Jamie Dickinson – Talking (ASC) (2026)
Raised on a cocktail of pop, opera and jazz – to name just a few genres present in his life – Jamie Dickinson began performing at age five, and music just kept flowing through his veins. By the time he was 10, Dickinson had participated in West End tours with pro-opera company Ellen Kent. In 2023, he released his debut EP, I: The Beginning, and he is currently studying his MA at Berklee College of Music. We came across Dickinson earlier this year to discuss his EP, Emergence, and today we’re hitting the play button on his latest single, ‘Talking (ASC)’.
In our interview with Dickinson, he shared that “Music means everything to me. It gave me a way to express myself as I’ve never been able to before”, and this inspiration is highly evident in his single ‘Talking (ASC)’. Delving into the world of neurodivergence, the UK-based musician shares his experiences, offering people a glimpse into this complex reality. He explains:
“One of my personal purposes in life was to be an ambassador for neurodiversity. Being autistic has come with its fair share of struggles, but I’ve always been grateful for having it. I know there are some people out there who unfortunately don’t feel the same, so I wanted to create a personal song in the hopes that anyone who struggles with neurodiversity knows they’re not alone.”
Self-produced, ‘Talking (ASC)’ retains the electropop sound we hear in previous single ‘Fallin’; however, it appears far more intricate and obscure. In one sense, there is a mellifluous, soothing quality to the pop track, with an endearing warmth. In another, the track is jarring, abrasive and brash with piercing tones throughout the melody. The standout feature is the persistent plucking of guitar strings creating an off-beat, prickling, static electricity-like feeling that can be disconcerting, but it’s also intriguing.
Given the obtuse melody with Dickinson’s rich vocals, listening to ‘Talking (ASC)’ is like walking through his mind. You can perceive reality as something flowing with a hum-drum sentiment; however, that constant plucking is the obscurities, challenges, and what people call oddness of being neurodivergent. Clever, very clever.
With ‘Talking (ASC)’, Jamie Dickinson proves himself a musical alchemist pouring powerful meaning into profound melodies. Highly recommended.
