The Butterfly Graveyard – Big City (2026)
Teetering the line between fragility and force, singer-songwriter The Butterfly Graveyard’s music is as delicate as a butterfly’s wing, belied by the power of a “punch in the gut, slap in the face” sound. From moving soft-rock and soul to cinematic variations of pop, the Irish artist saunters across melodic realms, finding distinctive sounds, yet still defying normality. Join us as we delve into his most recent release, ‘Big City’.
Following the well-received single, ‘Gatecrasher’, The Butterfly Graveyard continues his romantic thread with ‘Big City’… well, sort of. In ‘Gatecrasher’, he wove a tale of a guy trying to impress his love by stealing priceless art; in ‘Big City ’, the star-crossed lovers up and run to the bright lights of a big city determined to make their dreams a reality. This is one aspect I enjoy about The Butterfly Graveyard – his way to tell stories with intriguing narratives and poetic lyricism. Co-penned with Herbie Macken, The Butterfly Graveyard explains:
“Lyrically, it is an age-old tale of two star-crossed lovers who leave their small town and escape to the Big City to follow their dreams. I suppose the track is in the tradition of Tracey Chapman’s ‘Fast Car’, two young people feeling trapped by the situation and dreaming of a new and better life. I’ve always been fascinated with the move from the rural backwater to the metropolis; it’s the sense of anonymity and where the possibilities are endless. As for our two star-crossed lovers, they probably end up becoming bank robbers and go out in a blaze of glory like Bonny and Clyde.”
Melodically, ‘Big City’ was co-produced by Tomas Mulcahy and Herbie Macken, and finds the line between dream pop and alternative pop with avant-garde obscurity. A bold beat pulsates in the background, keeping an upbeat pace to the track; however, above that bold beat, softer synths swerve, slice, and bring a soothing element to ‘Big City’. At one point, synthetic hype meets deliberate organic sounds as a piano confidently stomps across with a simple yet contemplative tone.
