Considering Chloe Jessica names influences like Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Kelly Clarkson, one should imagine the UK-based musician to lean strongly toward a contemporary pop-friendly sound. Given this assumption, it is intriguing to hear Chloe Jessica pounding pop-rock through my speakers. We came across the band with their debut single, ‘The Middle’, ‘Bitch In A Dress’ continues the path of their heavier, rock-tinged style that retains the pop tinge, but is not a true pop song. Joined by Adam Gould (guitar), Neva Bevan (bass) and Holly Borlase (drums), ‘Bitch In A Dress’ transcends their streaming platform, dragging us from a comfy couch in our home to the university recording studio. Produced by Will Hallett, the single captures raw grit and sophisticated precision in almost five minutes of music. A heavy bass weaves across the melody, with a scorching guitar adding grit, and the drums pound in the background. It’s odd, but while the drums have a bold sound, they also offer an anchoring tone from pulsating beats to smooth steadiness.
Reminiscent of early 2000s acts like Avril Lavigne, ‘Bitch In A Dress’ has the cheekiness and in-your-face brashness of yesteryear. An obscure sense of barebones sparseness locked within the sweep of pop-rock music – a real figure of “scratch on the knee at the skatepark” roughness. For me, Wood’s vocals tend to enhance the barebones authenticity in an alto that seems vulnerable, but is mostly a song of female empowerment.
