WhiteRoomNightmare – Blue To Black (2026)
The brainchild of self-taught singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Paul Anketell, WhiteRoomNightmare is more of a dream than a nightmare. Influenced by the 1990s alternative metal and grunge scene, the Northern Ireland artist should appeal to fans of Soundgarden and Helmet; then again, his heavy, hard-hitting sound can be appreciated by all (it might even convert a few people to hard rock). We came across WhiteRoomNightmare a few years back with the 2023 single, ‘What You’re Made Of’. Join us as we sit back and rediscover WhiteRoomNightmare with his single, ‘Blue To Black’.
Following his 2025 single ‘Space Cadet’, ‘Blue To Black’ is the fourth and final track from WhiteRoomNightmare’s upcoming album. As with ‘Space Cadet’, the new single offers a heavy, hard-hitting sweep of alternative rock music; however, ‘Blue To Black’ is smoother, gentler, and uses the instrumentation to express intense emotion. In other words, at least this is the case for me, the crashing drums, bold bass and scorching guitar bind into a sound that pushes on your chest, placing a suffocating sense of melancholy in your heart – not literally, of course.
Discovering the place where music is the only way of expressing raw emotion, ‘Blue To Black’ might seem a little overwhelming with its grunge-inspired vibe. Then again, it’s the dark weight that enhances the message of nostalgic reflection, vulnerability, fragility and a strange solace. WhiteRoomNightmare explains:
“‘Blue To Black’ is a ballad written from the point of view of an astronaut leaving Earth’s orbit and setting off to begin a new life on the Moon. As he does so, he reflects on a special someone he has left behind and compares the relationship to that of the Earth and the Moon – forever dancing through the Sun’s rays.”
While the grungy grasp of ‘Blue To Black’ might be a great theme song for the things that go bump in the night, WhiteRoomNightmare is, as I mentioned, a dream and not a nightmare. I await his upcoming album with bated breath.
