Color Channel – So Far (2022)

Initially the project of two childhood friends, Color Channel technically began in 2010, but since then many changes have been made and it is now a five-piece group from the USA. Influenced by life in its entirety, Color Channel insert sex, food, heat, dancing and sweat into their melodic rhythms – in other words, they capture everything about the world in a sonic expression. Featured on various playlists and blogs, the group is building a loyal following on an international level. The latest addition to their discography is ‘So Far’.

Following their debut single ‘Don’t Call It A Comeback’, Color Channel moved from an upbeat, bouncy sound to something smoother and more eclectic. Opening with a soothing vibe, there is a simplicity to the hazy ambience sending you off on a glistening sonic river. Just a note: the simplicity doesn’t really last. The melodic arrangement is heavily textured building an obscure sound that wraps itself around you like a gossamer blanket. Yet, while there is an otherworldliness about the melody, it has a sense of comfort making it easy to listen to.

Yes, there is a hazy ambience to the ethereal single, the bolder vocals add warmth to its eclecticism. Dulcet tones run harmonically through the melody, but also have a prominence that makes them the defining feature. As I mentioned, Color Channel is inspired by life and ‘So Far’ is a tribute to endless hours of being in love. Complex and with a sense of mindless naivety, the sophisticated single sends you bowled head over heels – just like when you are insanely in love.

Overall, I enjoyed the track. This is my introduction to Color Channel, so I was unsure what to expect. I believe there are “feel songs” and “describe songs” and ‘So Far’ is a “feel song” that you need to listen to it to truly understand.
