Foundry Town Survivors – Hopes and Dreams (2022)

With their single ‘Mississippi Rising’, Foundry Town Survivors brought the awe-inspiring fury of nature’s unstoppable forces to our ears. Their single ‘Hopes and Dreams’ continues their style of bringing desperate circumstances to life through its tale of ambition, frustrated hopes and fears. Woven into the dark allure of adventure and transgressions is a hunger for recognition, fear of irrelevance and hammering urgency.

Tapping into unchecked human desire, the single swings from grandeur to destabilisation in both the music and lyrics. Bringing a hint of psychedelia to their Americana mix, they are shooting listeners out into the stratosphere while tapping into all our base desires. This is brought to stunning visual life with their music video which won a film festival award at the Best Shorts Competition in La Jolla, California.

‘Hopes and Dreams’ vibrates deeply through your chest while some rather ominous higher tones chime through the darkness. The toe-tapping drums burst into existence and meet those higher tones perfectly. The guitar washes across the top of the drum sweeping across a desolate desert. There is a dark feeling to the music as it creates a twilight soundscape that the vocals reach through to pull you into the story of the track. The melody does have this rhythm that keeps you moving forward through the twilight. This forward momentum pulls you to the guitar solo which is absolutely amazing as it rises into the stratosphere, taking you along for the ride. The soaring guitar drops back into the twilight tones that really get you slowly bopping and swaying to the sound.

The vocals bring a gruff scratch to the single as the lyrics draw you into the story of the song. The story opens with amazing vivid lyrics that paint a scene across your brain. The chorus rises from the empty road of the opening verse, using a rather catchy movement. You may just find yourself singing along to the chorus before it ends for the first time. The light roughness of the vocals curls around the tale of ambition, shattered hopes, dreams that never come true and the slow creeping of weariness. The single brings the engaging rock style of the band to an amazing story that you can’t get enough of.

The award-winning video brings the story detailed in the lyrics to life with a great artistic flair. The storytelling lyrics are translated into clear monochrome visuals in the opening that slowly turn into colour. The hopes and dreams of the tale are in vivid neon colours, while the journey is a long black and white drive. It is easy to see why the video won a film award as it sucks you into the story, while offering a deep connection with the characters, leaving you invested in what will happen next.

Foundry Town Survivors use a slower rock pace to curl a tale of ambition, shattered hopes, soaring guitars and fear to life in ‘Hopes and Dreams’. The music has a twilight feeling that brings the feeling of dashed dreams to life, while the vocals bring a gruff curl to the story of the lyrics. The accompanying music video brings the single to life with stunning and vivid visuals.
