Danny Addison – Lady (2021)

Underlying contemporary folk with twinges of funk and pop, Danny Addison has a soothing, soft and flowing sound. This might be the singer-songwriter’s solo project, but Addison is no newbie to the music scene. Between 2014 and 2018, he founded and performed with the pop group Young Monarch resulting in a Sofar Sounds Tour and show at the Royal Albert Hall. In 2019, Addison embraced his solo career supporting Chole Foy at the Cambridge Folk Festival, Lakefest and Greenman Festival – strong performance slots, don’t you agree? Yet, you do not need to attend a show to be moved by his music as his material is soul-stirring in itself.

Following his hypnotic single ‘Tribe’ (read our review here), Danny Addison releases his meditative track ‘Lady’. Using his distinct acoustic-influenced sound, ‘Lady’ has a tranquil effect with smooth instrumentation throughout the flowing tune. While the single has a strong guitar-led quality, Addison showcases his multi-instrumentalist skills with sporadic placements of a classical violin. Mixed and mastered in collaboration with his brother Tom Addison, Danny Addison brings together classical and casual sounds in the haunting ‘Lady’.

Unlike ‘Tribe’, ‘Lady’ is softer and smoother tossing you into a haze of whimsical sonic clouds. Brimming with pink perfumed comfort, Addison holds your hand as he guides you through the lighthearted mist. Yet, while there is a soothing side to the single, there is a depth of content with the more sombre lyricism. I am not saying the lyrics are heartbreaking but rather heartfelt and warming.

The second single from his upcoming four-track EP Porcelain, ‘Lady’ has a steady pace and can leave you grinning with its endearing sound; however, there is a fragile innocence adding poignancy to the calming song. Touching on the “troubles one faces while trying to make their way in the world and how those pains can be alleviated”, ‘Lady’ delicately executes feelings of empowerment, optimism and self-belief.

In addition to the single, Addison released an official music video for ‘Lady’. Instead of using several sequences with various scenes, Addison retains a simplistic presentation to represent a sincere sound. Despite being only a film of Addison singing in the shower, the heartfelt beauty of this singular action enhances the power of ‘Lady’.
