Draumr – Some Other Night (2023)

Performing under the ancient Norse term for dream, French musician, producer, and director Gabriel Cheurfa creates a haunting, otherworldly kaleidoscopic swirl of dreamy sound as the artist Draumr. For almost one decade, Draumr has enthralled listeners with his surreal blend of pop, chillwave, synthwave and downtempo melodies. From his four-track EP Neflibata in 2015 to 2020’s ‘Sunlight Tryst’ and ‘Elsewhere Forever’, Draumr turned heads across the globe. This is my introduction to the French artist but his extensive coverage in various publications, confident performances and features on playlists has him garnering a loyal following on an international scale. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Some Other Night’.

Returning from a three-year absence in releasing material, Draumr began 2023 with the single ‘In A Daze’. Following ‘In A Daze’ and ‘Slowly Burning Feelings’, ‘Some Other Night’ shifts from a mellifluous sonic haze to an upbeat, toe-tapping swirl of sound. Listening to Draumr is like being sent adrift on a glittering lake and it is ‘Some Other Night’ that sees the tumultuous waves below the surface; in fact, it hits you in the face with white water rapids.

Leaning toward the pop sounds of the 80s, ‘Some Other Night’ sets the stage with a synth-driven foundation running a million miles per hour. While the racing synths have your heart pounding, a sliver of indie-rock pierces the pulsating beats with bold guitars and an echo of drums. This merging of rock with pop is not a new thing but, for some reason, ‘Some Other Night’ astounds in its alluring frenzy.

For me, dreamy synths with glam sensibilities can leave you completely enthralled in an evocative rapture OR it leaves you wanting. ‘Some Other Night’ diverges from Draumr’s typical path with a “complex emotional landscape subtly evoking sounds reminiscent of The Weeknd and Billy Idol. An invitation to boldness and musical escapism that leaves no one indifferent.”

In addition to the single, Draumr released an official music video for ‘Some Other Night’. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is strongly recommended.
