Floracene – Make Me Stay (2026)

Releasing their debut single, ‘Bruises’, in 2019 – at least, according to Spotify – US-based Floracene have been building a following, honing their sound, and basically turning heads with moving melodies for some time. They’re no newbies to the scene, particularly with confident performances enticing audiences to jump, scream, and have fun at every gig. However, this is our first time listening to Floracene; rather apt considering the lads are turning a chapter in their sound, so it’s like finding something entirely new in a seasoned band. Join us as we delve into their new single, ‘Make Me Stay’.

Floracene’s first release under independent label Free Dive Collective, ‘Make Me Stay’ sees the lads turn toward a more polished, easy-listening, chilled-out tone. They retain the hard-hitting indie-rock sound of 2025’s ‘On & On (Comfort)’, but there is a softer, gentler, more “sigh of relief with a sweet smile on your face” attitude. Vince Quaciari’s bass pounds across the track, while Derek Sattazahn shifts from anchoring to crashing drums. Pat McHugh’s guitar swerves in the song, flying overhead, while Pat Johnson’s rich vocals dance across the tune. Produced by Tyler Ripley, the song is sophisticated and elegant, yet it conveys a sense of innocent fragility.

With an upbeat, summertime melody but poignant lyricism, ‘Make Me Stay’ juxtaposes melancholy vulnerability and empowering self-acceptance. Johnson explains, “’Make Me Stay’ is about the push-and-pull of a relationship. It’s about someone who may not be toxic; they may not be a bad person, but they are just bad for you. Maybe not even forever, but at this time.” Quaciari expands that the track is about “Being confident enough to know that you are completely fine in your own independence, yet feeling strongly enough about someone to tell them that they could be the one to make you stay, is a really profound moment that I hope everyone can experience in their lives.”

Sincere, sentimental and honest, ‘Make Me Stay’ unpacks the complexities of relationships. It might not be an overly memorable track, but it’s a nice calm before the storm.
