The Cunning Linguists – Love In The Dark (2026)

While The Cunning Linguists’ Spotify boasts a slew of singles over 2025, including several politically-charged commentaries, the new single, ‘Love In The Dark’, is a debut in itself as the band expands from two to three scorching players. Fronting the noise is singer-songwriter Clare Easdown, pounding those drums is Bart Gill, and speeding across the melodies with scorching intensity is Jade Ryan’s guitar. Self-described as “music that sounds polite until you listen properly… where intelligence meets innuendo…”, The Cunning Linguists bind feisty words in an even feistier punk-rock blast. Join us as we delve into their new track, ‘Love In The Dark’.

Following quite a special cover of Madonna’s ‘Frozen’, ‘Love In The Dark’ adopts a “fierce lyrical direction” with Gill’s intense songwriting; however, the gritty chaos of punk isn’t entirely evident. Instead of crashing in your face with hard-hitting music that tosses you into a mosh pit, ‘Love In The Dark’ is haunting, eerie, and sends chills along your skin with its ethereal sensibilities. Drums offer an anchoring beat in the background, while Ryan’s guitar steadily walks along in a rhythmic bind. Add Easdown’s rich, obscure vocals, and it’s almost as if she’s drawing you out on a dark sonic river like a siren calling out in the night.

Produced by Jacob Morris at Pleb City, with mixing and mastering duties by Easdown and Ryan, ‘Love In The Dark’ has a polished elegance and maturity, but, in the same breath, it’s off-kilter, naive, and a little disconcerting. Interestingly, the odd push-and-pull of sophistication and wanting perfectly captures the conceptual and thematic intent. The band explain: “Conceptually, the track explores the unique solace one finds within another person, balancing intimate, unconventional connections against a backdrop of heavy, rhythmic punk.”
