Forgotten Garden – Rain (2026)

Described as “Lana Del Rey meets The Cure” – a description that immediately places an image of singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey with Robert Smith’s lavish make-up in my head – Forgotten Rain delves into the tragedies and mires of life with an intriguing indie sound. Formed in 2019 by Portuguese singer Ines Rebelo and Scottish musician Danny Elliot, the European duo draw together diverse cultures yet retain the lingering sounds and themes that transcend distance, space and time. In their previous single, ‘Overlord’, Rebelo and Elliot explored the concept of greed with vivid, vibrant imagery and sounds. The most recent addition to their discography is the haunting single, ‘Rain’.

Rain can often be associated with sadness, despair, and the dragging down of thoughts into a desperate void; however, rain can also be associated with cleansing, rebirth, and empowerment. Forgotten Garden turn toward the former with their new track. The band explains: “’Rain’ is a moody indie rock/pop song about depression caused by a relationship breakdown. The man of the couple walks away believing that he’s going to be ok, but soon finds out that he’s not! The rain references in the song are motifs for the depression caused by the breakdown.”

Recorded and produced by Forgotten Garden, ‘Rain’ retains the light indie-pop tone heard in ‘Overlord’, but presents a darker hint of melancholy. Well arranged, the melody is sophisticated and polished, binding Elliot’s drums and bass with Mel D’s smooth guitar. I find this interesting as there is an odd juxtaposition between the sad and the glad – a “downer” but also a bit of a soothing tone to ease the haunting fragility.

Easy to listen to and sincere, ‘Rain’ is calming, gentle and mellifluous, while maintaining the complexities and upsetting consequences of broken relationships. This is Forgotten Garden’s second release in 2026, and I’m interested to see what else the duo has planned for this year.

In addition to the single, Forgotten Garden released an official lyric video for ‘Rain’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel.
