Harsh Language – Helium Heart (2026)
Should you take a fancy to Smashing Pumpkins and Placebo, but quite like some Depeche Mode on the playlist, then the chances are you’ll take to Harsh Language. Familiar and nostalgic, but with a flit of modern-day edginess, Harsh Language is unique, frenetic, and, oddly enough, comfortable. Drawing together the musical stylings of Sean Shreeve (vocals and guitar), Rob Green (vocals and bass), and Alec Albury (drums), the London-based trio is “…what a modern alternative hard rock band can be using big riffs, emotive harmonies and hectic electronica…” The band began as the solo project of Shreeve, but since 2022, the lads have been making music for the masses with powerful melodies and insatiable live shows. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Helium Heart’.
Co-produced by Sean Shreeve and Philip Marsden, ‘Helium Heart’ fits perfectly in the realm of hard rock, but, considering the heaviness of the arrangement and slight metal-tinged vocals at one point, it saunters across melodic metal as well. Dark, powerful and brimming with grit and grunge, ‘Helium Heart’s crashing drums, scorching guitar and bold bassline swim about you with full-bodied agitation, frenzy and force. Yet, within the twirl of dense guitars and drums, the slip of twinkling electronic beats adds a lift that is simultaneously refreshing and menacing.
Yes, I can easily see ‘Helium Heart’ as one of the fan-favourites during an energetic, throbbing, kinda wild and sweaty underground venue performance. It’s powerful without forcefulness; a single of vulnerability, intimacy and intricate intensity. For me, however, some salvation lies in the rich vocals. Entwined with the darkness of the song and theme, but calming and endearing. When speaking of the weighty theme, Harsh Language explain:
“At its core, ‘Helium Heart’ is about loss – the feelings of shock, guilt and everything in between that make you feel empty and weightless inside when one hears of the passing of someone close.”
