Huw Cadwaladr – not only a name complicated to pronounce if you don’t ask or have an idea of Welsh, but also a person with as complex a persona. Then again, as intricate as things are, a degree of simplicity can be found with Huw Cadwaladr. Producer, musician, recording artist, and presenter on Radio Sudd, Cadwaladr is a known figure in the UK electronic music scene, focusing on ambient, cinematic sounds born of raw emotion and vulnerability. Growing from a period of “profound personal upheaval… during a time of recovery and reflection…” his single ‘I Believe’ became both a lifeline, escape and cathartic place of solace. Offering the first glimpse into his new project, Cambria Nocturna, Cadwaladr reconnected with fellow bandmate and creative, Gruff Pritchard – the other half of his electronic duo Carcharorion. While the pair had a strong reputation for expressive electronic music, ‘I Believe’ marks a turn from downtempo, electronic, club-ready music to a binding of organic and electronic in an off-kilter melodic wrapper. A movement from hazy, wistful house beats to songwriting and a lyrically expressive approach.
Not meant for public release, ‘I Believe’ began as therapy, but quickly developed into something deeper, channelling feelings into a kaleidoscopic tapestry of “raw emotion, human connection, and resilience.” Recorded and produced by Cadwaladr and Pritchard, with mixing by Alexander Green, ‘I Believe’ is not a song merely to hear but hits you with a palpable feeling of tension, vulnerability and tenderness.
Like staring out onto a sonic river with a glistening surface, you feel lost and prepared to step out into the musical adventure. Experimental tape loops retain the enigmatic vibe, while the simple beat of drums, percussion, and what might be a haunting string invites an organic rush into ‘I Believe’. The thing is, as much as there is a meeting between acoustic and synthetic textures, it is the harmonic union of all that lifts you off onto the river with elegance, charm and sophistication.
I’ll admit, when ‘I Believe’ came across my virtual desk, I was a little apprehensive. Electronic music has never been a particular favourite genre for me; however, ‘I Believe’ is proof that you shouldn’t take things at face value. Hitting play and delving into Cadwaladr’s discography, I found myself taking a deep breath and feeling tranquil release in the gentle music.
