Of course, it’s not all bad with the sweet-smelling rose here and there, but with ’10 Past 5’, the UK-based musician isn’t looking at the nice stuff. Join us as we sit back, drink a much-needed cup of tea and turn on the speakers.
Following his debut single, ‘The New Dance’, ’10 Past 5’ is a ”…hilarious and painfully relatable… exploring the blurred line between genuine connection and chemically enhanced optimism.” Self-recorded and produced, ’10 Past 5’ hits that sweet spot between high-energy pop music, blasts of ska-meets-soul blushes, and a sweep of garage-rock.
A confident dance beat pulsates in the background, keeping the pace for a high-swing song. Almost anchoring, a drum skips along the arrangement with a stomping bass. A clip of a guitar weaves across; however, it’s not these elements as the stand-out feature. A saxophone, a trumpet and an interspersed piano lift the melody, placing a great, kaleidoscopic shimmer and stamp on a toe-tapping, finger-clicking, get up and enjoy yourself tune.
Melodically, ’10 Past 5’ is a great upper on a dreary, tiring, and already weary Monday morning. However, there is a juxtaposition of upbeat fusion and a disappointing narrative of identifying the existence of romantic self-deception, washed with British humour that makes it amusing. Southpaw Grammar shares: “At its heart, ’10 Past 5’ is an ode to chemical romance in all its messy, funny and occasionally disastrous forms. It captures that fleeting moment when attraction feels profound, every coincidence seems meaningful, and every red flag somehow looks beige. It’s a celebration of poor decisions, temporary delusions, and the strange optimism that keeps people swiping, dating, and falling for the wrong person over and over again.”
