Down South Pepper Band – Shady Road (2026)

Imagine a couple of guys wearing Stetsons, cowboy boots, with a mischievous glint in their eyes and a country-rock flair in their grin; now imagine those guys in Norway, and you have Down South Pepper Band. Hailing from Oslo, the veteran musicians bring the best of the Midwest to a Nordic wonderland, melting the ice and hearts of every listener, new and old. We came across Down South Pepper Band a few years back, when they were already turning international heads, and today we’re reconnecting with the globally recognised, chart-topping, critically acclaimed Down South Pepper Band.

Combining the talents of founding duo, Rune Nyby and Per Øyvind Mathisen – on vocals and guitar respectively – with Alexander Adrien (bass), Eiving Kløverød (drums), and Lars Rune Rebbestad (steel guitar), ‘Shady Road’ is a four-minute sweep of country-rock/Americana. The steady drums beat in the background, with a bass walking alongside, each offering an anchoring element, but also peeking with an impish attitude. Mathusen’s guitar soars across the melody, enhancing the rock quality. However, it is the steel guitar that ups the country twang.

‘Shady Road’ is made for festivals, saloons, and the fireside moments when you’re chilling with mates. The gruff vocals are notably sophisticated and sharp, but there is a ruggedness making the track a little vulnerable and confident.

Delving into the complexities and sometimes tragedies of brash reality, ‘Shady Road’ has sincerity, honesty and introspection. Melodically, it’s moving; the lyrics add weightiness. Down South Pepper Band explain: “The song is about our observations of people who don’t live up to their potential and become a disappointment to their families, friends and themselves. People who are wasting their talent and how that ends.”

In addition to the single, Down South Pepper Band released an official music video for ‘Shady Road’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel.
