Jay Gerrit – A Better Man (2020)

Jay Gerrit started his musical journey in 2006 after playing the drums in a local choir for teenagers and a Christian hip-hop formation band. After years of working with writers, he made the move to creating lyrics for his own productions. His latest single ‘A Better Man’ is an introspective but expansive track bringing something genuine to the music scene.

The song was written and produced during the Dutch lockdown. The song looks at the simple life Gerrit leads and how everything that has happened in the past few years has made him a better man. The outward view of the song takes in the help that people needed at the time and how this was instantly provided by others.

‘A Better Man’ has a hauntingly beautiful opening that floats along your skin. This leads to an easy beat that makes you tap your foot to the rhythm of the song. At first, the melody seems to be minimalistic but there are a few layers that work in tandem to pull you along. It is an interesting mixture of electronic tones and pop sensibilities.

As the melody builds the foundation of the track, Gerrit’s vocals are a lightly echoing ray of light. They are emotive and make you listen to the lyrics which take you on a journey of lockdown. There is a hopeful feeling in the lyrics as they detail how people help each other and how everything has made Gerrit a better person. It is a very different take on lockdown to other songs on the topic.

Jay Gerrit gives you an insight into his mind and how lockdown has transformed people in ‘A Better Man’. This is a beautiful song that combines light electronic notes with smooth vocals and emotive lyrics. The subject matter is relatable, but the different take is what really makes this track a must-hear.
