Jayna – I Don’t Want To! (2021)

While growing up is inevitable, there are a lot of people who don’t really want to. This is the basis of ‘I Don’t Want To!’ by Jayna which tells the story of not wanting to grow up and get a real job. Drawing on a lack of motivation to pursue previous career aspirations, she brings an honest track to our ears with a message that a lot of people can relate to.

Before the pandemic and the start of her solo career, Jayna could be found playing with various bands around Chico State. Since the start of the pandemic, she has released a debut single and is following it up with this track. Easy to relate to and an honest telling of emotion, this single is one that you can easily get lost in.

‘I Don’t Want To!’ has a contemplative vibe in the opening through the acoustic guitar. There is a very light feeling to the music that merges with a lazy vibe. This vibe is like the general laziness you feel when everything seems to just be too much effort. This perfectly matches the underlying subject of the track. The melodic elements that enter later in the song bring a slightly dark vibe with them like creeping tendrils of depression. While there are a lot of emotional responses called forth by the music, there is also a very easy vibe that you rest back into.

Jayna’s vocals have a wonderful folk vibe to them that is laced with a touching honesty. Her performance is so easy to connect with as we have all felt the emotions of the track at some point. As the song progresses, you get a feeling of the frustrations she feels with the flow of life and the conflict of dreams versus reality. It is a really emotive performance that is filled with a raw honesty that offers an insight into her experience in the world.

Jayna fills you with the frustration of life and the feeling of not wanting to grow up in ‘I Don’t Want To!’. The folk soundscape eases you into a lazy vibe where you don’t want to move while the vocals set out all Jayna’s frustrations. Her performance is packed with honesty while offering a relatable thread you can hold onto.
