Josh Savage – Young Fools (2021)

With an impressive musical background, singer-songwriter Josh Savage has supported acts like Roll Deep, Jack Savoretti, Kodaline and Catfish & The Bottlemen – all gigs booked on his own steam (no agent, manager or label). Known for engaging performances, the UK artist has played across four continents. In fact, he even performed for Dubai’s Royal Family, not something everyone can boast. Yet, he retains an innocence in his evocative music that is both spine-chilling and heartwarming.

Blending elements of folk with contemporary pop and indie-rock, Savage could be described as a mish-mash of Justin Bieber, Tom Odell and Charlie Puth. Described as “absolutely stunning” by BBC Introducing and “familiar and undoubtedly unique” by Ear to the Ground, Savage walks the line of obscure originality and genuine comfort with his sound. The latest addition to his well-received discography is ‘Young Fools’.

Following his unique take on the hymn ‘Silent Night’, Savage continues to show innovativeness as an artist in the single ‘Young Fools’. Reminiscent of old-school 80s-pop, the melody swells with steady beats, pounding drums and dynamic guitars; however, his artistry is noted with the undertones of contemporary pop. Showering elements of dream-pop atop the old-school beats Savage shows his eclectic style bringing together classic and modern-day sounds. Moreover, the use of electronic synths and interspersed piano demonstrates a balance between organic and synthetic instrumentation.

Constantly using personal experiences to fuel his engaging melodies, ‘Young Fools’ is the sonic representation of understanding, accepting and knowing love. Based on a long-distance relationship, the Germany-based artist explains how the track came to fruition saying “we (Savage’s partner and him) handwrote letters to each other, sent them across the ocean and met all over the world. I finally understood ‘love’ and hard as I tried could not find a replacement. No other word did it justice so I caved in and broke my own rules”.

Alongside the moving melodic arrangement, Savage’s rich vocals enhance the poignancy of the lyricism. Lighthearted and carefree, ‘Young Fools’ exposes the vulnerability, fragility and delicacy of mature intimacy. His dulcet tones flow easily with the soothing sound creating a smooth single that juxtaposes naivety and sophistication in its unique content. I might be reading too much into this, but what I know is ‘Young Fools’ has sincerity, honesty and tender sentimentality to captivate anyone’s heart.

In addition to the single, Josh Savage released an official music video for ‘Young Fools’. You can view the video on his YouTube Channel.
