Lauren Carter – Chase the High (2020)

Modern life behind a screen can be both exhilarating and frustrating. Both emotions are brought to life by Lauren Carter in her single ‘Chase the High’. While the track considers the dopamine addiction from getting likes online and the frustration of swiping on apps and internet culture, it does have a deeper meaning. Resting within the consideration of digital life is a look at substance abuse and the desire to break free and do something more fulfilling.

The single brings out Carter’s pop side with a beat-driven soundscape leaving the piano and strings of previous releases behind. A classically trained opera singer, she writes and records pop singles in addition to performing as an opera singer.

‘Chase the High’ opens with a rich sound that only gets more luxurious as the single progresses. The lush tones of the opening rest like a maroon fog over the irresistible beats that enter from the depths. There is an almost sultry vibe to the music as it twirls around you. Those beats really grab your head and will not let go. The other melodic elements weave between the beats to add depth to the music while lighter tones add a twinkling higher layer.

The smooth depths of the melody are only enhanced by Carter’s seductive vocals. Through her performance, she draws you into the track with a nuanced effortlessness. The harmonisations on the chorus of the track only add to the rich texture of the song and cover you in the sultry flows of the music. Her lyricism is amazing as the single can be taken in various ways from an addiction to digital life to substance abuse or an addiction to a person.

Lauren Carter combines sultry vocals with deep beats and luxurious melodic elements for the seductive tones of ‘Chase the High’. Every element in the single comes together for a luscious single that drips rich tones into your ears. Carter’s vocals are perfection while the beats hook you and pull you along the velveteen melody.
