LAWRN – The Westside (2020)

Truth be told, I am not certain what to type up as a review of LAWRN’s single ‘The Westside’. It’s not because I don’t have anything to say – trust me, I can be a chatterbox going off on a tangent most times. The thing is, whatever I digitally pen to this digital page will not seem good enough for ‘The Westside’. How do you analyse a song that engages you from the first second and fills your soul with joy? I suppose I have to try…

According to their press release, LAWRN’s keyboard-driven sound is the result of singer Andrew composing songs on the piano. Couple this with a love for the 1980s synth-pop sound and you have the London-based trio LAWRN. Despite only forming in 2018, vocalist Andrew, guitarist Ollie and drummer Harm have gained popularity on the London scene. Along with supporting larger acts, such as Belle Mt and Superheart, LAWRN has performed at popular London venues including the O2 Academy Islington and Notting Hill Arts Club.

The second single to be released in 2020, LAWRN’s ‘The Westside’ is one of the tracks off their upcoming EP. Somewhat steadier than the previous single ‘Life Forever’, ‘The Westside’ has a smooth and tranquil sound. Written about a vacation lead singer Andrew took to see his girlfriend in Los Angeles, the song may be considered somewhat of a ballad. Perhaps this could explain why the melodic vocals exude a sense of heartwarming happiness. Furthermore, the blending of rich vocals with dynamic instrumentation only emphasises the true charm of the track.

Beautiful and blissful, ‘The Westside’ is another example of LAWRN’s captivating and engaging sound. As I said, I really don’t know how to adequately review this track – all I know is I wish I had a boyfriend who wrote such lovely songs for me. #relationshipgoals
