Lucian Lacewing – Night Of Whispers (2026)
When I first read this singer-songwriter’s name, Lucian Lacewing, I immediately imagined delicate music wistfully wandering across a soft, calming, breathy soundscape – I mean, Lucian Lacewing is just such a lovely name. When I hit the play button, what I heard was exactly that. A symphony of whispers, an enchanting twirl of sonic grace, but with some specks of darker eeriness creeping into the melody. Given the UK-based musician only has two releases, according to Spotify, that is, I’ve not much to work with or listen to; a new minnow in a glistening sonic pool of industry professionals. So, join me as I sit back, turn up the volume, and discover whether this swipe of music is worth four minutes of my busy day.
Following his debut single, ‘Land Of Enchantment’, ‘Night Of Whispers’ is a sweep of twinkling alternative-pop music with a unique, almost avant-garde sensation. Finding a line between organic and electronic music, Lacewing layers silky synths with an almost fairy-like lightness; however, as the airiness is delicate, darkness filters into the melody, with interspersed horns. For me, ‘Night Of Whispers’ brings a further obscurity and eclecticism with the interplay of Western pop and Middle-Eastern flavour, courtesy of the acoustic oud.
Unlike ‘Land Of Enchantment’, which featured a plethora of vocalists, ‘Night Of Whispers’ is void of any vocals or lyrics. Truthfully, it’s engaging even without a single word being uttered. Captivating without really trying to be, the single has a peeping intensity while retaining an entire dismissal of urgency. Melodically, the song is profound, and its expression of the theme adds further weightiness. Lacewing explains:
“’Night Of Whispers’ is about being at Avebury Stones, Glastonbury Tor or Stonehenge on the shortest night of the year. Awaiting the first beautiful rays of sunlight of the Summer Solstice. It is all about altered states, communion with the natural world and enjoying darkness.”
After listening to the full single, what is my overall opinion on Lacewing and ‘Night Of Whispers’? It’s not overly memorable, but lingers in its eclecticism. Do I recommend it? Sure, I do. Is it worth the time? Sure, it is. Am I eager to hear more from Lacewing? I definitely am.
